Six Chaves County Detention Center inmates are facing charges in connection with an attack on detention center staff last year.
Chaves County Undersheriff Charles Yslas told the Roswell Daily Record in an interview Jan. 23 that detention center inmates Edward Gustamantes, 24; Matthew Trujillo, 34; Jonah Flores, 26; Jeffrey Contreras, 28; and Gabriel Martinez, 40, have each been served with arrest warrants on two counts each of aggravated battery on a peace officer.
Electronic court records confirmed all five were served with arrest warrants on Jan. 11, a day after they were issued.
In addition to the battery on a peace officer charge, Martinez and Contreras each face two counts of resisting, evading and obstructing an officer, while Trujillo faces two counts of aggravated battery on a peace officer.
An arrest warrant was also issued for a sixth person, Rosendo Dimas, 30, who faces two counts of aggravated battery on a peace officer.
The charges followed an investigation by the sheriff’s office into the Nov. 25 melee. Court records state that the investigation included the viewing of six minutes of surveillance video of the inmates battering corrections officers. Two officers sustained injuries to their faces.
