Female self-defense class slated for Sept. 15

On Saturday, Sept. 15, women in Artesia can learn how to fight fear with F.E.A.R.
From 8 a.m. – noon Sept. 15 in the Park Junior High School gym, 1501 Cannon Ave., the Artesia Chamber of Commerce will host a self-defense class called Female Empowerment And Readiness, or F.E.A.R. “It’s both a self-defense class and an awareness class that will be geared towards women,” Debbie Brown of the Artesia Chamber said. “For example, the class will be teaching women things like where to park at nighttime on a college campus for night classes. And not that we endorse this kind of behavior, but if you’re drinking at a party, you’ll know what type of drinks can mask the taste of date rape drugs.”
The class will be taught by Chad McBroom, the founder of Comprehensive Fighting Systems and designer of the Raptor, a widely-used self-defense tool. According to his website, McBroom is also “extensively trained in several Filipino martial arts, boxing, Muay Thai, Silat, Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, various knife fighting arts, and a variety of grappling arts.”
As a release states, McBroom will be demonstrating both the mental and physical skills necessary to avoid harm from larger and multiple attackers quickly and effectively with easy-to-learn and easy-to remember techniques. Students will also learn how to assess street safety, identify key pre-assault indicators, and measures to take after an assault has occurred.
