FFA Greenhand students win state

All the hard work nine FFA Greenhand Parliamentary Procedure students had done finally paid off.
On Jan. 16, Artesia FFA took nine students to Portales to compete in the 2012 State Parliamentary Procedure Contest. The students made it to state by winning the District 5 contest Jan. 11. After a grueling day of competition Monday, they were fortunate to find out they had won first place. While many other chapters worked hard and competed well, Artesia FFA still came out on top, proving the title the Artesia FFA Chapter holds, “Chapter of Champions.” … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
Seven students competed in the contest with two alternates. Those students were Dana Thalman, Donna Solt, Nicole Moss, Jeffrey Fanning, William Bricker, Wyatt Kishur, Bryce Bowerman, DeLaney Hanagan and Cooper Hall.
The Parliamentary Procedure Contest is extremely tough. The students have to display their proficiency at running an FFA meeting. The Greenhands also have questions they can be asked during the contest from a bank of questions 66 pages long.
All in all, Artesia FFA is extremely proud of the members for the hard work they’ve done and helping to bring the chapter success.
But that’s not where the story ends. For the first time ever this year, the National FFA Organization is introducing the National Greenhand Parliamentary Procedure Contest. This made Artesia FFA advisor Monte Avery extremely excited.
“When I got the e-mail from the National FFA Organization about the introduction of the National Greenhand Parliamentary Procedure Contest, my heart skipped a beat,” Avery said. “I really wanted these kids to win state and be the first team to represent New Mexico in this new contest.”
The students will head to Indianapolis, Ind., in October to compete in this brand new contest. They will be the first team ever to represent New Mexico and will hopefully bring another trophy home to the chapter.
