From left, Helen Mariscal of Yucca Healthcare Center, Fire Marshal James Abner and Sylvia Flores of Yucca Healthcare look on as Mayor Phillip Burch signs a proclamation Wednesday afternoon declaring June 2012 as Firework Safety Awareness Month. According to the proclamation, while using personal fireworks is an American tradition used to celebrate our nation’s birthday, fire is a serious public safety concern on the Fourth of July. Nationally, twice as many fires are reported on July 4 than on any other day of the year. In 2010 alone, there were 8,600 firework-related injuries. Also, the region is experiencing severely dry conditions, and irresponsible use of fireworks can cause devastating consequences to public and private lands. The proclamation states the safest way to enjoy the thrill and spectacular display of fireworks is through a public firework demonstration conducted by trained professionals.
