For Dr. Roberto Labayen, Artesia General Hospital’s newest doctor, being a urologist is “the perfect marriage” between the personal need to communicate with people and a desire to make those same individuals better off than when he found them.

“I’ve always been a people person,” Labayen said. “And I realized that urology has a lot of office work where I could speak and listen to people. For me, urology was the perfect marriage between my want to interact with people and my desire to be a surgeon.”

Labayen first graduated from the University of Buenos Aires Medical School in Argentina. From there, he completed a residency in general surgery at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Md., before heading to the University of Pittsburgh to complete a residency in urology.
After finishing his last residency, Labayen stayed at the University of Pittsburgh as a clinical instructor for one year before returning to Argentina for two years to begin a urology residency program in a 1,000-bed, private hospital. Labayen then headed to San Francisco, where he practiced urology for many years.
