ARTESIA – A 24-year-old Artesia man died Saturday after sustaining an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Just before 11 p.m., Artesia Fire Department EMTs were dispatched to the 1100 block of South Fourth Street in reference to the shooting.

Joshua Rolan, co-owner of Artesia business Tread Shed, was pronounced dead at the scene by the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator, Artesia Police Department Sgt. Lindell Smith said.

APD detectives are currently investigating the incident and have interviewed at least four witnesses, but the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.

Smith said until assistant district attorney Les Williams reviews evidence and rules on whether charges stemming from the incident will be brought, the full report on the incident would not be released.

“Until the DA comes back we can’t put (the death) in a category,” said Smith.

Williams is on vacation until next week.
