A 24-year-old Artesia man, who fled police and then engaged in a seven-hour standoff with local law enforcement officers at a residence on Fifth Street on Friday, was charged later that same day with shooting at or from a motor vehicle and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Lino Aguirre, 24, of Artesia, was charged after a SWAT team seized him from a residence where he had barricaded himself in the early morning hours.

The standoff began after a local detective observed Aguirre driving a blue SUV at a high rate of speed at approximately 2:45 a.m. According to Artesia Police Department spokesman Sgt.
