Ignacio “Nacho” Mariscal has announced his candidacy for Artesia City Council District 1.

Mariscal is the incumbent in the upcoming Regular Municipal Election, having been elected to his first team on the council four years ago.

Mariscal is a lifelong resident of Artesia and is familiar with many surrounding areas as well. The fourth of 12 children, he graduated from Artesia High School and attended Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, receiving his Electronic Mechanic Technician’s certificate. He worked for many years in the oilfield as a heavy equipment operator and was employed by Navajo Refining Co. for 25 years.

Upon his retirement, he went to work for DCP Midstream as an instrument tech under Mariscal Construction Co. until 2016. He and his wife have raised four children: Carnation, Caroline, Ignacio Jr. and Israel.

He has participated in many activities in Artesia, including cooking in the Smokin’ on the Pecos barbecue competition, for which he thanks David and Vickie Grousnick, and sponsoring balloons in the Balloons & Tunes Festival. He was also one of three founding members of the Slow Pitch Baseball League.

Mariscal built his own home at 1107 Mahone Drive in 1983 and began attending city council meetings due to an interest in the Eagle Draw project, on which he feels the city did a great job.

“We need to keep working for the betterment of Artesia residents on things such as jobs and housing,” he said. “We are a small city, but we have many things to be proud of, and as long as we work together, we can make living even better.

“I have been serving in the council for four years, and I look forward to serving another term, reaching new goals, and solving issues that need our attention. I am ready to listen and work for you because together, we can make things happen. I would appreciate your vote very much.”
