Melissa Plotner comes from a long-standing family here in Artesia, where she was born and raised. She graduated from Artesia High School and went on to attend New Mexico State University, where she received both her bachelors and masters degrees in communication disorders.
From there, Plotner went to work in Rio Rancho as a speech and language pathologist, working with pre-K through 12th-grade students in the public schools, as well as working some at hospitals and rehabilitation clinics.
