No, it’s not quite time for a big election, but this one is as important as any.

Every six years, SB9 comes up for consideration by the voters. What is SB9? It amounts to necessary public support for Artesia School District to keep our schools well maintained and equipped.

SB9 is a two-mill levy assessed on the taxable value of property owned by the residents inside Artesia Public School District. That means property owners pay $2 per every $1,000 of taxable valuation. If the taxable value of your home, for instance, is $100,000 you will pay just $200 per year. That support ensures our schools are maintained, equipment is purchased to maintain our school facilities including buildings and grounds, computers and other educational equipment is purchased for our children to learn, buses and other vehicles are purchased that allow our students to travel to games and other competitions, and so much more.

If you have children or grandchildren in our school system, they will benefit by being in a strong, safe, and nice facilities with great tools for learning. But, even if you don’t have kids in our school system, it is easy to argue that you still enjoy the benefit of a solid educational system for our community, properties that are maintained and help our community look great, and another good reason for families to move to Artesia.

The citizens in Artesia Public School District have been supporting SB9 for more than 30 years, without hesitation. That means your taxes will not go up; everything will just continue as normal and you won’t feel a thing. It also really says something about our community. We believe in putting money and energy into the next and future generations who represent the continuation of all that we have built. Let’s keep it up!

Early voting is open now. Go to the Eddy County sub-office in Artesia (602 S. 1st St.) anytime Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Starting October 21, you can cote on Saturdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or Monday-Friday until 6:00 p.m.

If you’re old fashioned like me and just want to vote on Election Day, that’s Tuesday, November 7 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You can vote at the County sub-office or visit one of the other convenient voting locations: Faith Baptist at 20th & Grand, Trinity Temple at 1507 W. Hermosa, or CVE at 13th & Richey. It’s so easy, will only take a couple minutes, and always feels good to cast your vote.
