What began as a weekend on the couch for local pastor David Grousnick and his wife, Vickie, watching a marathon of shows on national barbecue competitions has now blossomed into what the couple hopes will become the next big thing in community events for Artesia.
National barbecue competitions have grown significantly in popularity over the past several years, due in large part to the televising of such events by channels such as the Travel Channel. After watching one such marathon last April, the Grousnicks decided to pitch the idea of bringing a barbecue competition to Artesia to the Artesia Trailblazers, of which Grousnick is president. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
“They bought into it hook, line and sinker,” Grousnick said.
The first step in the process was for both Grousnick and his wife to attend training for organizers of competitions, as required by the Kansas City Barbeque Society.
