ARTESIA — Do you remember the thrill you had waking up on Christmas morning and finding a brand new shiny bicycle under the tree? You could hardly wait to take it outside and go for a ride.
Sadly, there are many children in southeast New Mexico that never get to experience the thrill of a new bicycle under their Christmas tree. Ride for Bikes, a 501.c.3 charity, is working hard to change that situation. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
Ride for Bikes was conceived in late November 2005 when a group of Navajo Refining employees were putting together industrial bikes for use in the refinery. It occurred to the employees that there were many children in Artesia that would love to have a new bike on Christmas morning but were not going to get one. They decided to change that, and in less than two weeks, they raised $6,000 and purchased 35 bikes for CASA House. During the week, the group got together to assemble and deliver the bikes.
