Superintendent says budget constraints are the reason why

Superintendent Mike Phipps, citing tight budget constraints at Monday’s school board meeting, said Artesia Public Schools will not replace seven employees who have chosen to leave their jobs this year.
The district intends to absorb the positions by shifting employees within the district.
The seven employees set to leave APS at the end of the school year are Janet Grittini, APS psychologist who is set to retire at the end of the year; and Meridith Bakker, third grade teacher at Yucca Elementary School; Toni Cano, educational asst. at Central Elementary School; Fred Gonzales, custodian at Grand Heights E.C.C.; Lyn Harrison, secretary at Central Elementary School; and Amy Scroggin, language arts teacher and coach at Artesia Intermediate School, who will all resign at the end of the year. Clovis (Colby) Taylor, a P.E. and athletics teacher at AIS was also approved for a leave of absence.
As part of the budget discussion at Monday’s board meeting, 2011-2012 salary schedules were considered and approved. None of the Artesia Public School employees will get a pay raise this year. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
