CARLSBAD — Several new businesses are in the works in Carlsbad, including a Maverik and a Dunkin Donuts.

According to Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway, the community will soon become the next city in Southeast New Mexico to receive both a Maverik and a Dunkin Donuts. Plans have been submitted for a Maverik at 1902 E. Greene St. and a Dunkin at 851 S. Canal St.

Roswell is the only nearby city to currently house a Dunkin Donuts location, and Artesia became the first New Mexico location outside of Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Gallup to receive a Maverik when the gas station and convenience store opened in June on the northwest corner of 26th and Main streets.

A new McDonald’s is also planned for Carlsbad, which will mark the city’s third Mickey D’s location. Conceptual drawings have been submitted for review for 3214 National Parks Hwy., adjacent the Carlsbad National Bank building.

Janway has also reported a possible remodel of the Sears building at 609 S. Canyon St. and expansion at Carlsbad’s Wal-Mart. The latter project would increase the area of Wal-Mart dedicated to online shopping pick-up at a valuation of $1.3 million.

Plans are also in the works to construct a new shopping center along National Parks Highway, north of Chapman Road, that would house 14 retail businesses — including a Marshall’s and a Hobby Lobby — and nine restaurants.
