Artesia Mayor Phillip Burch, center, delivers a proclamation Tuesday declaring June 26-27 as Smokin’ on the Pecos Days in Artesia. Smokin’ on the Pecos will celebrate its fourth anniversary this year. The state barbecue championship features teams vying for bragging rights and top prizes as they showcase their grilling skills and highlight the barbecue traditions of New Mexico. This year’s event will also feature concerts by Jo Dee Messina and Little Joe y La Familia, along with a craft show, mounted shooting competition, Kids’ Q, and performances by The Fabulous Pacers, Cavern City Boyz and local bands. Smokin’ on the Pecos is a sanctioned event of the Kansas City Barbeque Society and Rocky Mountain Barbeque Association.
