The Bulldog football team made a significant statement in their first game of the season against a fellow Class 5A opponent Friday, mercy-ruling Belen with time still remaining in the third quarter, 51-0.

The ‘Dogs took a 15-0 lead out of the first quarter and were up 36-0 at the break before bringing the hammer down in the third.

A safety with 4:14 to go in the quarter was followed less than a minute later by Artesia’s sixth touchdown of the night, and after recovering the fumbled kickoff deep in Belen territory, the Bulldogs punched in one last score to end the game with 2:12 on the clock.

With the W, the ‘Dogs improve to 3-0 on the season as they prepare for another long road trip and 5A match-up next week against Deming. The Wildcats (2-1) suffered their first loss Friday to Goddard at Wool Bowl, 35-12.
