Lady ‘Dog tennis moves to 2-0 in district, ‘Dogs pick up first D4 win

The Artesia High School tennis teams made a clean sweep of Portales Tuesday in their second District 4-AAAA dual of the season at the Mack Chase Athletic Complex.

With the 9-0 wins, the Lady Bulldogs moved to 2-0 in D4 play, while the Bulldogs picked up their first district victory of the season, improving to 1-1.

In girls’ singles action at The Mack:

    The AHS tennis teams kicked off their District 4 schedule Thursday, March 28, on the road, with the Lady Bulldogs notching a 7-2 win over Lovington while the Bulldogs fell by a final of 8-1.

    The Artesia girls took all but one match in both singles and doubles action against the Lady Wildcats. The Lady ‘Dogs swept the top four singles matches in straight sets, with sophomore Kirklyn Miller besting Lovington’s Cecilia Sanchez 6-0, 6-0; sophomore Adrienne Harvey topping Diana Gonzalez 6-4, 7-6 (7-1); junior Anna Netherlin defeating Melyssa Avitia 6-2, 6-0; and junior Peyton Stone beating Amy Mendoza 6-4, 6-4.

    In the No. 5 matchup, freshman Abigail Jowers came up short of Lady ‘Cat junior Neftali Suchil, 3-6, 2-6, and junior Korinne Morrison topped Lovington’s Joselyn Salcido in three in the No. 6 pairing, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (9-7).

    In doubles action, Harvey and Miller defeated Mendoza and Avitia 6-3, 6-1, and Jowers and Morrison bested Suchil and Salcido in a hotly contested match, 7-6 (7-5), 0-0 (3-6), 10-6. In the No. 2 pairing, Netherlin and Stone fell to Sanchez and Gonzalez, 3-6, 2-6.

    The Bulldogs, meanwhile, came away with just a single win against a tough Wildcat squad, that coming courtesy of freshman Paul Miller, who topped Lovington’s Peyton Atwood 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 in singles play. Other scores included:
  • Cutter Summers vs. Michael Nava: 6-4, 3-6, 2-6
  • Damian Lopez vs. Rey Salcido: 0-6, 3-6
  • Alejandro Madrid vs. Hector Burciaga: 2-6, 7-5, 2-6
  • Ethan Bunt vs. Eduardo Sigala: 1-6, 1-6
  • Joshua Martinez vs. Jonathan Bolaina: 4-6, 0-6
  • Lopez/Summers vs. Salcido/Burciaga: 6-0, 4-6, 2-6
  • Bunt/Miller vs. Sigala/Nava: 2-6, 1-6
  • Madrid/Martinez vs. Atwood/Bolaina: 3-6, 6-3, 4-10

    The Artesia netters had a solid run of regular-season tournaments overall, with the Lady ‘Dogs finishing second March 8 at the Carlsbad Invitational and third at both the March 1 Alamogordo Invite and the March 15 Claire Higgins Family Invitational in Carlsbad.

    The Bulldogs also finished third at the Clare Higgins and were fourth at the season-opening Lovington Wildcat Remix.

    The teams will now prepare to host Goddard in their third of four district duals at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at The Mack.
