Four meets into the 2024 season and with their basketball athletes just beginning to make the transition to spring sports, the Artesia High School track and field teams are already racking up state qualifications.
The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs eased themselves into their schedule March 1 at the Early Bird Invitational in Roswell but still came home with four qualifications on the boys’ side, courtesy of Ethan Conn in the 110-meter hurdles (15.89), the 400- and 800-meter relay teams (43.19 and 1:32.64), and Parker Jarratt in the high jump (6’2″).
The ‘Dogs added three new qualifications March 8 at the Ron Singleton Invite in Carlsbad. On the track, sophomore Marcos Ornelas joined Conn in the 110 hurdles with a 15.66 and Juan Diego Duran qualified in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.36, while in the field, sophomore Marco Soto surpassed the mark in the shot put with a 44’7″ throw.
The Lady Bulldogs picked up their first qualifications March 15 at the Cleveland Invitational in Rio Rancho, with Sydney Boone topping the field in the 800-meter run with a 2:28.76 and Brooklynne Ivans winning the shot put with a 34’3″. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, bettered two of their running times, with Conn logging a 15.68 in the 110 hurdles and the 400-meter relay team a 43.05.
But both teams had their biggest meet thus far Friday at the Capitan Quad, with the Lady ‘Dogs notching three new qualifications and the ‘Dogs six.
In boys’ field events, Bryce Parra and Luis Torres qualified in the long jump with distances of 20’7.5″ and 20’4″, respectively, while Phillip Finley turned in a qualifying 41’3″ in the triple jump. On the track, Tootie McNeil joined the 110 hurdle contingent with a 16.07, and Ornelas was first to qualify in the 300 hurdles with a 41.42.
For the Lady Bulldogs, junior Hattie Harrison became the second athlete to qualify a running event with a 16.31 in the 100-meter hurdles, and seniors Lorin Wagner and Kymber Beltran added themselves to the roster in the shot put with respective throws of 35’7″ and 33′.
The teams will next head to Hobbs Friday for the annual Gene Wells Relays, followed by the Jim Love Invitational Thursday, April 11, in Portales.
