ARTESIA — A 20-year-old Artesia man is in custody today following a shooting Thursday afternoon in the area of First Street and Kemp Avenue.
At 12:20 p.m. Thursday, officers from the Artesia Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of Gage Avenue in reference to shots fired. Upon arriving in the area, they identified a 37-year-old male victim with a gunshot wound to his upper extremity. A suspect was immediately identified and was located minutes later in the area of the 200 block of Gage Avenue, near Artesia Head Start. In a release, the APD stated because of the very short time period between the incident and the suspect being taken into custody, Head Start was not placed on lockdown, as there was determined to be no danger to students or staff.
Jose Ruiz, 20, was arrested and charged with crimes relating to the victim’s injuries, shooting at a vehicle and placing three additional people in fear for their lives. Officers determined the crime took place in the area of First Street and Kemp Avenue.
