Helen Mariscal, left, and Sylvia Flores, right, of Yucca Healthcare look on this morning as Mayor Phillip Burch signs a proclamation declaring January 2012 as Thyroid Awareness Month in Artesia. According to the proclamation, it is estimated 59 million Americans have a thyroid problem, with a majority of them not even aware of it. Thyroid problems can affect every aspect of an individual’s health, particularly related to weight, depression and energy levels, and thyroid problems left untreated can lead to other conditions, such as raised cholesterol levels, heart disease and sometimes even coma or death. The proclamation urges “all people to make healthy choices in their life using the resources available to them and to seek information on the latest research, screening, early diagnosis and treatment for thyroid ailments.”
