New Mexico state legislators urged Department of Transportation Cabinet Secretary Tom Church to approve the expansion of U.S. Highway 82 between Artesia and Lovington last week in a letter signed by 11 state senators and representatives.

“Southeastern New Mexico’s energy production is vital to the state’s wellbeing and to our economic growth,” House Republican Leader Don Bratton said in a press release Thursday. “U.S. 82 is a major artery for the oil and gas industry that must be maintained and ultimately expanded to accommodate the increased traffic.
