ARTESIA — The victim of a fatal accident Saturday evening on South First Street was a Honduran national, whose identity is continuing to be withheld pending notification of next of kin through the Honduran Consulate.

Upon arrival, EMTs began providing medical treatment to a pedestrian injured in the wreck and subsequently transported him to Artesia General Hospital. The victim was later pronounced dead at 8:23 p.m. Cause of death was determined to be massive trauma resulting from the impact.
The APD on-scene investigation revealed a 2007 Jeep Wrangler, driven by a 26-year-old Artesia man, was traveling southbound on South First Street at approximately 50mph when it struck the pedestrian, a 23-year-old Honduran national.
The victim was apparently standing or walking in the outside travel lane at the time of the wreck. There were two adult passengers in the Jeep. No one in the vehicle was injured.
