A woman was found dead Saturday, July 11 in Artesia and police said “foul play” was suspected.
Police were called to the scene at about 7:20 p.m. at an apartment complex operated by the Artesia Housing Authority at 904 W. Lolita Ave.
The housing authority is a government agency that offers low-income housing to Artesia residents in need.
When police arrived at the complex, they found the woman dead inside a storage closet on the back porch of a vacant apartment, read a July 12 news release from the Artesia Police Department.
Police said the woman initially appeared to have fallen in an area near the storage closet and was inside the closet “for several days.”
She was not identified as of Sunday and the body was sent to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator for an autopsy. Police did not provide a cause of death or details on the woman’s injuries.
Police did confirm that “foul play is suspected” via the news release, and that the case was being investigated as a homicide.
