Firefighters with the Artesia Fire Department and a number of area volunteer departments work to control a hay fire that broke out around 2 a.m. today in a barn at Avenue A and North Roselawn Avenue. Cpt. Eli Herrera with the AFD reported the blaze itself, which comprised approximately half of the large barn, was extinguished within a few hours, but firefighters were still at work this morning monitoring and extinguishing the hay as it continued to smolder. Assisting the AFD were volunteer departments from Atoka, Riverside, Sun Country, Cottonwood, Happy Valley and La Huerta.
