The Artesia Police Department and Artesia Animal Shelter are advising the public to check the local shelter first for dogs that broke loose due to recent high winds.

The winds, which gusted to around 40 mph Sunday and Monday, blew open gates and compromised fences around some local yards and facilitated the escape of several pets.

The animal shelter, located at 501 Paddy Wagon Way north of the Public Safety Complex, can be reached at 746-8860 for those seeking lost dogs.

Proof of ownership, such as rabies shot papers, etc., and a driver’s license will be needed to pick up pets.
