ARTESIA — The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) has reported that an Artesia Fire Department firefighter was arrested after firing a shot during a domestic incident.

The ECSO arrested Mario Samaniego just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday on warrant charges of aggravated assault against a household member with a deadly weapon, to wit: a firearm. The warrant was issued following a dometic dispute that occurred Feb. 25.

During that incident, Samaniego reportedly drove to the residence of his estranged wife, and a verbal altercation ensued. According to the ECSO, Samaniego proceeded to fire “a shot from a gun he had retrieved.”

Samaniego is currently scheduled to appear for preliminary examination at 9 a.m. April 2 before Judge Megan S. Fish in Carlsbad Magistrate Court.

Anyone with potential information regarding this incident is urged to call the ECSO Domestic Violence Coordinator at 575-887-7551.
