A 25-year-old Artesia man was arrested Tuesday and charged with the murder of 30-year-old Joseph Darras.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen this way,” Jess Carpenter reportedly told the deputies as they were handcuffing him on the morning of the incident.

The Eddy County Sheriff’s Department reported that deputies were dispatched to 92 Firehouse Road at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday, May 21 in reference to a shooting. The report reads that when they arrived, deputies found Carpenter seated on the front porch of the residence.
