ARTESIA — An Artesia man was killed Friday morning in a wreck on South 26th Street.

The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) was dispatched just before 7 a.m. Friday to 26th Street, just south of Tumbleweed Road, in reference to a single-vehicle accident.

Upon arrival, deputies located the vehicle, which had been driven by 24-year-old John Alexander Vasquez of Artesia. Vasquez was ejected during the wreck and later succumbed to his injuries.

The ECSO Community Action Team, with the assistance of the New Mexico State Police, conducted the investigation and determined that seatbelts had not been properly utilized. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.
