An Artesia man was killed Saturday in an ATV accident.

Just after 1:40 a.m. Saturday, June 12, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) were called to investigate a fatal ATV wreck near South 26th Street and West Fairgrounds Road, south of Artesia.

Initial investigation indicated a 2016 Honda side-by-side ATV, driven by Benjamin Ray Hernandez, 22, of Artesia, was travelling west on Fairgrounds Road. For reasons unknown, the Honda entered a curved portion of the roadway and rolled.

Hernandez, who police say was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the ATV. He was transported by emergency medical personnel to Artesia General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The NMSP say alcohol does not appear to have been a contributing factor in the wreck, which remains under investigation.
