Above, Artesia High School junior Kaitlyn Harwell delivers a first-place run in the pole bending event Saturday at the high school and junior high rodeo at the Artesia Horse Council Arena. Harwell’s time of 21.003 topped the field, and the junior also took second place in the breakaway with a 2.74, third in barrel racing (18.225), and fourth in cutting. Saturday’s results also included a third-place finish for Bryce McCormick in boys’ cutting, a fourth place for Conager Derrick in saddle bronc riding, a 10th for Maddy Deerman in barrel racing (18.603), and a ninth for Beau Kelley and Milligan in team roping (14.86). In junior high action, Clate Harwell took first in chute dogging (4.96) and Denton Faver second (5.16), Faver and Harwell were second (14.85) and third (16.76) respectively in tiedown, Jade Jackson was second in girls’ breakaway (4.42), and Harwell and Morgan Northcutt were sixth in ribbon roping (16.04).
