Two students act as “medics,” dragging a “soldier” off the battlefield that is the Park Junior High School gym this morning during a Civil War reenactment played out as a game of dodgeball. Students in Nicole Kirkpatrick and Christi Prewett’s eighth-grade history classes engaged in the battle as part of Park’s Civil War Day. The entire eighth-grade class spent the day in the 1860s, writing letters to their families in English classes, learning about Civil War diseases such as typhoid and gangrene in science classes, completing worksheets inspired by the Civil War in math classes, making Civil War food in home economics, and singing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” in choir.
