The courtroom was still as District Judge J. Richard Brown sentenced 36-year-old Artesian Michael Brown to 16 years in prison Monday in District Court in Carlsbad.

In October, Brown pleaded guilty to 42 counts of criminal sexual contact, one count of incest and one count of criminal sexual penetration.

While Judge Brown read impact statements written by victims, Brown — the defendant — repeatedly turned to glance toward his mother, who was sitting behind him.

“This is my least favorite part of my position,” said Judge Brown. “Sentencing is like a funeral, and I feel like the minister at the funeral — lots of things are being buried.”
