Particularly for a young team such as the 2015 Bulldogs, there are going to be hang-ups. The ‘Dogs endured their first of the season Tuesday evening in their inaugural road trip to Hobbs.

The veteran Class 6A Eagles handed Artesia an 11-1 mercyrule defeat at Watson Stadium, taking a 6-1 lead at the half before closing out the contest with 15 minutes remaining.

The ‘Dogs’ lone goal, courtesy of Christian Lopez, made it 3- 1 at one point in the first half, but it was all Hobbs from there.

It was a tough experience for the boys in orange but an experience nonetheless – one they will quickly put in their rearview.

“We’re going to keep trusting the system and keep working hard,” head coach Phillip Jowers said today. “Hobbs is just an older team and a lot more experienced.”

The Artesia boys will host their second Class 5A bout of the season Saturday when Valencia comes to town, and Jowers says he will looking to see his athletes regrouped and refocused.

“We’re looking forward to Saturday,” said the coach. “We’re going to practice hard the rest of this week, work on some of the stuff that we were lacking focus on, and learn from our mistakes.”

The Bulldog varsity will compete at noon Saturday, followed by the JV at 2 p.m.
