The Artesia High School cross country teams began the 2011 season with a host of newcomers, an abundance of inexperience, and no idea how the year would play out. The runners that ended the season Saturday at the Class 4A State Meet in Rio Rancho were very different than those that first took to the streets of Artesia for the teams’ inaugural preseason practices this past August.

Having grown more than head coach Marcos Morillon and they themselves could have expected this year, the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs headed to state this weekend with the program’s seventh consecutive District 4-AAAA titles under their belts and a goal of simply doing their best in mind.

And while the team placements of 15th weren’t quite what the squads were hoping for, the experience gained by a program that will return nearly every runner in 2012 was valuable beyond measure. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
