Artesia seeded fourth in 4A state playoffs, draw a bye through this week’s first round

There was no question what sort of game the Bulldog football team was looking for Friday night at Wool Bowl in Roswell: clean and dominant.

With the Class 4A state playoffs looming and the boys in orange still one win away from evening their overall record, the ‘Dogs were languishing at No. 5 in the New Mexico High School Coaches Association polls behind top-ranked Goddard, Aztec, Valencia and Los Lunas.

Having come up just short of some of the top-tier schools in Class 5A as well as District 4-AAAA champion Goddard, Artesia was clearly worthy of a top-four seed in the playoff bracket and a bye through the first round of the playoffs. But the Bulldogs knew a solid showing against the Coyotes in both the district and regular-season finale was a must in order to earn that seed. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
