City Council members approved changes to the Greater Artesia Economic Development Coordination (GAEDC) board after much debate during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The GAEDC, which serves as a recommendation board to the City Council for economic development funding to expanding or new businesses in Artesia, requested that council members amend Section 3-5-1 of Artesia Municipal code in order to allow for permanent changes to the composition of the board.

The GAEDC, established in 2002, has helped to fund the expansion of various local businesses. The Artesia Vocational Training Center used funding from the program to add space to the Center which allowed for additional instruction from New Mexico State University and truck driver training. Penasco Valley Telecommunications also received $300,000 from the program to add fiber to expand communication to the industrial park.

The GAEDC has aided businesses and projects such as Horner Farms, the industrial park, Hotel Artesia and Desert Hills.
