The Artesia City Council voted unanimously Monday to approve the rezoning of property located on Richardson Avenue from 33rd to 37th streets. The zoning change will allow for the construction of apartments and duplexes in the neighborhood.
The area was previously zoned as a SA-2 “Suburban Acreage” but was proposed to be changed to PUD “Planned Unit Development.” The zoning change helped put into place plans proposed by Tom DuBose, executive with the 56-acre Trilogy Housing Development located near the Artesia Country Club, to build duplex and apartment units.
DuBose took his plans to the Artesia Planning and Zoning Commission during their June 15 meeting. After questions over the use of the land were answered, the commission approved the rezoning unanimously.
Several homeowners in the neighborhood attended Monday’s City Council meeting to voice concerns over allowing multi-family housing; many said they feared it would bring higher crime rates to the area. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
