Legislators in Santa Fe drew the ire of members of the Eddy County Commission this week when the New Mexico Senate introduced S.B. 268, which would repeal and amend sections of the Indigent Hospital and County Health Care Act to comply with recent changes in federal regulations.
Eddy County maintains a .125 percent gross receipt tax, the proceeds of which are pooled to obtain matching funds from the federal government for select hospitals. If a low-income or homeless person walks into a hospital without being able to pay for treatment, that fund subsidizes the hospital’s cost.
