In December 2023, Lea County Drug Task Force agents were contacted by the Security Threat Investigations Unit of the Lea County Correctional Facility regarding an uncovered plot to smuggle narcotics into the facility in Hobbs.

On Jan. 4, agents conducted a joint operation in an attempt to identify and detain the subjects involved in the plot.

The suspects arrived at a location in Hobbs where they met with an undercover narcotics agent. During the meeting, the suspects gave the agent a package destined for the prison. The subjects were then detained and questioned.

The two individuals were identified as 25-year-old Mirakel Carter and 30-year-old Aubrey Luna.

The package was found to contain approximately 110 grams of suspected methamphetamine,

215 grams of THC wax, and 14 sheets of paper soaked in an unknown substance, as well as $5,000 in cash.

The street value of the methamphetamine is approximately $3,300.

In conclusion of the investigation, Task Force agents arrested and charged both individuals with a number of drug trafficking charges
