The Artesia Daily Press received four awards in this year’s New Mexico Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
Competing in the Daily Class II division, which includes the Roswell Daily Record, Carlsbad Current-Argus, Hobbs News-Sun, Alamogordo Daily News, Clovis News Journal, Silver City Daily Press, Silver City Sun News, Deming Headlight, Los Alamos Monitor and New Mexico Daily Lobo, the awards included:
Columns: First Place, Brienne Green, “Artesia: My favorite fuel stop along a remote desert highway;” judge’s comment, “This piece uses humor like a scalpel. It carves up the pretension of other media outlets subtly – and it is more effective as a result.”
Series or Continuing Coverage: First Place, Brienne Green, “Artesia’s Food Truck Culture”
Sports Coverage: First Place, Brienne Green, Daily Press Sports Coverage; judge’s comment, “In spite of limited resources, this section shows broad coverage with appropriate attention to girls’ teams and less-popular sports. Writing from a community viewpoint is a particular strength. At-a-glance info is well organized. Nice college roundup page serves regional interest.”
Feature Writing: Second Place, Brienne Green, “Remembering a Hometown Hero;” judge’s comment, “A great read and a fantastic story. There was a very fine line between first and second place. Well done.”
Former Daily Press staff writer and photographer Tyler Green, now employed by the Albuquerque Journal, also took a Second Place award in Daily Class I website design.
