ARTESIA — The Artesia Drug & Crime Coalition will hold an open house from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. The event will consist of a come-and-go reception and a ceremony beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Artesia Chamber of Commerce.

The open house will be held to mark the 25th anniversary of the abduction of Dena Lynn Gore, a 9-year-old Artesia girl who was kidnapped and subsequently murdered in July of 1986.

During the open house, “Think First and Stay Safe” magazines from Child Lures Prevention will be distributed to parents. The magazines are aimed at teaching parents how to keep their children safe from child predators.

“We want to put one of these magazines in every home in Artesia,” said Nancy Husselman, manager of the Drug & Crime Coalition. “It’s about giving parents the tools to prevent this happening again.”

In addition to magazines for the parents, children will also receive workbooks full of safety lessons. The magazines and workbooks will be provided through generous donations from sponsors Navajo Refining, Holly Corp., Central Valley Electric, Devon Energy, Marbob Energy and Faith Baptist Church.
