ALAMOGORDO -- The U.S. Forest Service has announced Thursday,...

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), along with the Artesia Police Department, has scheduled a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day event in Artesia.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Artesia Public Library, 205 W. Quay Ave.

Items to be accepted include: prescriptions, prescription patches, pet medications, ointments, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and samples. Items that may be disposed of in proper, provided containers include: used and unused sharps.

Take-back services are free and anonymous, with no questions asked.

“These drug take-back days provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposal, while also educations the general public about the potential for abuse of medications,” said APD Cmdr. Lindell Smith.

Many thousands of pounds of prescription drugs were collected at approximately 6,100 sites across the nation in 2017.

“These items were removed from circulation and possible accidental ingestion by children and pets, as well as abuse by those that might be caught in that trap,” Smith said.
