EDDY COUNTY — The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) is continuing to investigate a shooting death that occurred Wednesday evening near Carlsbad.

ECSO deputies were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to County Road 206 (Illinois Camp Road) in reference to a vehicle burglary in progress. Seconds after being dispatched, deputies were advised an individual had been shot.

Upon arrival, law enforcement found a male individual suffering from a single gunshot wound. The man advised deputies he had confronted another male, later identified as 28-year-old Weston Bricker, after allegedly finding Bricker breaking into a vehicle that was broken down on the side of the road.

Initial investigation indicates a verbal altercation ensued, which resulted in shots fired. Bricker was located in a nearby field, unconscious and not breathing. He was later pronounced deceased.

The other male was transported to an out-of-state hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The ECSO Detective Division is continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with potential information is urged to contact Sgt. Kane Wyatt or Det. Alexander Duchene at 575-887-7551.
