Less than five minutes into the Eddy County Fire Chiefs Association’s meeting with the Eddy County Fire Board Monday night in Carlsbad, Fire Chief Roy Burkham of the Malaga Volunteer Fire Department rose and stated he would be taking a leave of absence. He walked out of the meeting, and more than a dozen other chiefs and volunteers followed suit. Only a few of the volunteer chiefs, including those from Otis and La Huerta Volunteer Fire Departments, remained behind.
This move by the volunteer fire chiefs follows months of conflict between the chiefs and Eddy County Emergency Services Manager Joel Arnwine over a series of revisions to county emergency services bylaws that the manager submitted to the County Commission two weeks ago. … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.
