Flocks of grackles take to the skies above Main Street Monday evening in a scene straight out of a Hitchcock film during the first round of the City of Artesia and Artesia MainStreet’s efforts to frighten the birds out of the area’s trees using fireworkers and firecrackers. Mike Deans and the Sons of Thunder pyro team are supervising the 30-second “displays,” which did succeed Monday in sending the birds fleeing. The persistent flocks seemed only mildly perturbed, returning to the trees within about 10 minutes, but additional displays are planned for sundown today and Thursday. Rob Larson - Daily Press
