Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at First Baptist Church for Foster “Gene” Sandlin of Artesia.
Sandlin, 91, passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, at his home.
Rev. Rick Sullivan will officiate the services. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Terpening & Son Mortuary.
Gene was born Oct. 4, 1927, in Jasper, Fla., the son of Kirby and Jeputha Sandlin.
On June 3, 1949, he married Mattie Anne Brorsen in Live Oak, Fla., and the couple moved to Artesia in 1953 and made it their home.
Gene worked many jobs in the oil and gas industry, working for Navajo Refining Co. for more than 30 years before retiring as a systems operator. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church before he couldn’t make it to church anymore.
Gene was also a lifetime member of the NRA and enjoyed working on old cars when he had the chance. He was an avid hunter and a collector of shotguns. Most people will remember him from seeing him walking almost everywhere he went.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie, of the family home; son Kirby L. Sandlin and wife Brenda of Roswell; and a host of friends and church family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Foster E. Sandlin; two sisters; and one brother.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Baptist Children’s Home in Portales.
