Artesia is mourning the loss today of a young security guard who was killed Sunday night just moments after reporting a suspicious person behind The Derrick Floor on Main Street.
According to police reports, at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, 24-year-old Michael Evans, a security guard with Sierra Security, called police after spotting a suspicious person in the 600 block of West Main Street. Evans, who was still in his vehicle, told police the suspect was behind The Derrick Floor monument but left when he noticed Evans was on the phone. As Evans drove off, he told police he saw the suspect in his rearview mirror near Yates Petroleum and said it appeared as though the man was “flagging him down.” … For the rest of the story, subscribe in print and on the web.

“Our officers were on scene by 10:47, two minutes after receiving the report, and by the time they found Mr. Evans, he was deceased,” said Sgt. Lindell Smith with the Artesia Police Department. Smith said the suspect had already fled the scene when officers arrived.
Reports indicate Evans was still inside his vehicle when he sustained the fatal gunshot wound.
