Lovers of all things classic and chrome are encouraged to head downtown this evening and Saturday for the Artesia Car Enthusiasts and Artesia MainStreet’s Main Event Car Show and Cruise.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the annual event, which puts a variety of vehicles, from the faithfully restored to the rodded out, on display for hardcore gearheads and those who simply appreciate the aesthetics alike.

The weekend kicks off at 6 p.m. today with a cruise down Main Street. The promenade generally begins from Roselawn Avenue, where the classic cars and trucks depart Heritage Walkway and head west on Main before making their way back to do it all again.

Those wishing to get a better look at some of the rides viewed in the cruise will then get their chance from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday as the car show begins in Heritage Plaza.

Cars will be on display, 1950s and ‘60s rock music will be in the air, courtesy of DJ John of Tucson, Ariz., and food and drinks will be on offer from Artesia MainStreet and Smokin’ on the Pecos.

In addition, the classic theme will be extended to the Ocotillo Performing Arts Center, as well, where Surf’s Up: The Beach Boys Tribute and Vinyl Stripes, a rockabilly band hailing from Texas, will be in concert today and Saturday respectively.

Surf’s Up will take the stage at 7 p.m. today and Vinyl Stripes at 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $35 for tonight’s show, $30 for Saturday’s, and may be purchased online at www.artesiaartscouncil.com or at the OPAC box office, 746-4212.

“The car show will bring together classic cars, classic music, and delicious food for a family-friendly day of fun,” said Elisabeth Jackson, executive director of Artesia MainStreet. “Come see the cars, shop Main Street, and enjoy the vibrancy of downtown.”
