The Lady Bulldog soccer team had little trouble from Ruidoso Saturday on the road, defeating the Lady Warriors for the second time this season, 7-0.
After spending the entirety of the opening 40 minutes on Ruidoso’s half of the field and compiling a 6-0 lead by the break, the Artesia girls were hoping to possibly end the game early. But although they were able to tack on just one more goal in the second half, the outing was a solid one from a Lady ‘Dog team that hadn’t competed since Sept. 20.
“We looked pretty good,” coach Tim Trentham said Saturday. “It was hard to gauge exactly because we weren’t playing as strong of competition as we would like, but we moved the ball pretty well and played around with our formation a little bit.
“We moved a couple of girls into different positions just to see some different options that might be a possibility going into district, and we really liked what we were doing. So we’re hoping to carry that through to Tuesday.”
Artesia got two goals apiece Saturday from Sadi Butler and Elisa Cardenas, and one each from Adrianna Baeza, Kiersten Hernandez and Raina Wesson.
“Ruidoso switched their keeper and played a little more aggressively in the second half,” said Trentham.
The Lady Bulldogs (7-4) will now prepare to open their District 4-AAAAA slate Tuesday at home against Lovington, and Trentham says his athletes will be looking to get the games that count off to a positive start.
“You never know once you get into district,” Trentham said. “We always tell them, you just have to focus on one game at a time and give everything you’ve got, leave everything out there, because you never know what can happen.
“It’s an emotional time in the season, every girl is usually giving their best effort, and home field advantage is always huge. But it’s time to put the rest of the season behind us, because what’s done is done and these six games are the ones that really matter.”
