After twice coming up short of the Class 5A Carlsbad Cavegirls – the last time by just five points – the Lady Bulldog basketball team wanted their last meeting of the season with their Eddy County rivals to show just how far they’ve come over the course of the regular season.

Before a sizable home crowd at Bulldog Pit Saturday night, the Lady ‘Dogs got their wish.

Through a low-scoring first quarter, a hard-fought second, a third period that saw the two teams tied heading into the fourth, and a thrilling final stand, the Artesia girls put forth one of their best efforts of the year in a 42-41 win over the ninth-ranked Cavegirls, a fact that bodes well going into the bulk of the 2010-11 District 4-AAAA slate.

“This was a great game for us,” Lady Bulldog head coach Jeff Houghtaling said Saturday. “I was super pleased with the way the girls played tonight.
